Le " Illinois Central Railroad (IC) " a été créé dans les années 1851 à 1899 pour couvrir la section des États-Unis qui est entre le bas du Lac Michigan et le golfe du Mexique en suivant la rivière Mississippi, avec une section se rendant au Nebraska.

Originalement créer en 1836, les opérations du IC commence seulement qu'en 1851, ce qui fait du IC une des plus vielles compagnie de chemin de fer aux États-Unis et un des plus longs réseaux au monde.

En 1972, une fusion avec le "Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad " forme le " Illinois Central Gulf Railroad (ICG)".

En 1988, le "Canadien National (CN) " fait l'acquisition du " Illinois Central Gulf Railroad ".

Dans " l'histoire du Illinois Central Gulf Railroad ", beaucoup de petites compagnies ont été acquises par celle-ci depuis la création de la compagnie, dont les " Mississippi Central ", le " New Orleans, Jackson and Great Northern Railroad", le " Memphis and Charleston Railroad", le "Pearl and Leaf Rivers Railroad", le "Chicago, St. Louis and New Orleans Railroad" entre autres.

Aujourd'hui la flotte du " Illinois Central Gulf Railroad " est intégrée dans la flotte du Canadien National. Mais selon mon vieux vieux Official Railway Equipement register de 2007 donne l'information que le IC et ICG posséderaient un peu plus de 10 000 wagons entre eux.
